The face of Hungary is varied, wherever we go on her land the landscape around us changes constantly. It is first and foremost characterized by even plains, gentle slopes and landscapes of medium-height mountains. At the place where these different landscapes meet, where the Eger stream leaves the picturesque crags of the Bükk Mountains and reaches the gentle foothills you can find the most beautiful baroque town in the country: Eger.
There are very few small towns in Hungary which are so pleasantly situated and which embody historical atmosphere as Eger does. In the Northwest the blue peaks and slopes of the pine-covered Mátra Mountains can be seen, these are the highest mountains in the country. The town is surrounded by gently sloping hills of volcanic origin. Everywhere the eye can see tens of thousands of vines covering the slopes, lending a peaceful and friendly atmosphere to the region. Eger is a town of many faces. Everyone can easily find in it something, which corresponds to one’s particular field of interest. People can find historic past and traditions, tourists can enjoy the spectacular excursion spots, art lovers can find beautiful buildings, statues, museums, libraries, wall frescoes, wrought iron gates, and Turkish relics. Strangers who visit the town, and guests from far-off countries can find everything, from serious music to modern dance, from swimming pool to picture galleries, from historic monuments to high standard theatrical performances, from antiquities to excursions and if we add to all this that its curative waters help many people to recover from sickness and last but not least mention its famous, throat-warming pure wine, we can rightly say that the town is a true tourists’ paradise. Sándor Petőfi, the greatest poet of the Hungarian people, was right when he ended his poem written at Eger with the following lines: “I must go to Eger, because my heart cannot resist all these sweet attractions.” The most important sights and historic monuments in Eger are the Fortress, the Lyceum, the Minaret and the Cathedral.
Eger is famous for its vines and wines. As the region’s near one thousand year history of vinegrowing testifies, nature has endowed the Eger Wine Region with ideal conditions to produce wine. In September the grape harvest is celebrated with a grand festival fit for a wine region of Eger’s significance. Bikavér and other wines are known and loved by wine drinking nations throughout the world. In the Szépasszony-völgy (Valley of the Beautiful Woman) where hundreds of cellars can be found visitors can taste the beautiful local wines and famous Hungarian dishes.
